only a drop in levies will be effective, says the Court of Auditors

It tempers the hopes placed in technical solutions that are too “expensive” or of limited scope, such as the desalination of seawater or the reuse of wastewater.

We will have to reduce our water consumption. This is the main conclusion of a report by the Court of Auditors, published Monday, July 17, on improving the management of this resource which is becoming scarce due to global warming linked to human activities. “A determined strategy for reducing water withdrawals and rational use of the resource is the only one likely to provide a long-term solution”, writes the Court of Auditors.

It tempers the hopes placed in technical solutions that are too “expensive” or of a limited scope such as the desalination of seawater or the reuse of wastewater, one of the avenues of the Water plan presented by Emmanuel Macron in March.

The Court of Auditors, on the other hand, encourages “Immediately strengthen the control of direct debit authorizations” and to “condition the public financing of infrastructure for securing agricultural irrigation to commitments (…) to reduce consumption and withdrawals”.
