Only 63% of Quebecers believe that young people’s place is in school, according to a survey

Even if a majority of Quebecers want better promotion of school perseverance, only 63% of them believe that a young person’s place is in school and that their very first job is to be a student, suggests a new survey.

Around 18% of respondents indicated they disagreed with this statement, while one in five people did not have a clear position.

The Quebec Network for Educational Success (RQRE) published this data on Monday from a survey carried out as part of the 20e edition of School Perseverance Days.

According to the Léger firm survey, 91% of Quebecers surveyed are of the opinion that society should do more to promote academic perseverance.

It also emerges that the dropout of secondary school students and the level of motivation of young people at all levels concern more than half of the respondents (59 and 57%, respectively).

Through these figures, the RQRE arrives at “a bittersweet observation”.

“The results of the survey not only illustrate the relevance of our movement, 20 years after the first regional campaign, but they demonstrate the still glaring need for the mobilization of all of Quebec towards the educational success of our children,” declared the president of the network, Andrée Mayer-Périard.

The survey also addressed the question of reconciling work and studies. More than two-thirds of respondents said they were concerned about young people’s ability to juggle school and a job.

The survey was conducted on the Web among 1004 Quebecers, between November 28 and December 3.

The 20e edition of Perseverance Days is being held this year with the theme “For the future, perseverance always goes hand in hand with the present”.

Until Friday, different activities are planned throughout Quebec with the aim of highlighting the role played by those around them in encouraging young people to persevere.
