At least one person died in one of the spontaneous protests that broke out in Venezuela on Monday, July 29, after the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro. “At least one person was killed in [l’Etat de] Yaracuy and 46 people are detained” following the post-election events, wrote on X Alfredo Romero, director of the NGO Foro Penal, specialized in the defense of political prisoners.

The rallies were punctuated by scuffles with the police, while Nicolas Maduro’s victory arouses skepticism from the international community, with the opposition asserting its power “prove” his victory. “Let him give up power now”chanted thousands of protesters in several poor neighborhoods of Caracas, some burning posters bearing the president’s image. They were dispersed by tear gas grenades as they approached the center of the capital.
