The Martin Lepage Mystery

Let’s go back in time to 2017, heading to the Caribbean Sea. A world-renowned sailboat catches fire, when it has just been arrested by French customs, suspicious of it. If this scenario seems worthy of a Hollywood movie, these are very real facts. Martin Lepage, fifty-something from Gaspé, an ambulance driver by profession and adrift captain of the famous monohull Livia, and his sidekick, Langis Bélanger, were thus arrested by the authorities who were quick to bring the fire under control and discover the pot of roses: a ton and a half of cocaine intended for the Canadian market, carefully packed in about fifty bales hidden in the ship’s ballast, worth some $100 million. Here is the starting point of an international investigation which mobilized the services of Paris, Martinique, Brittany and Quebec to try to go back to the source of this immense traffic.

But who is Martin Lepage, this inhabitant of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts to whom we would give the good Lord without confession? What is his role in this incredible story? Is he as naive as he seems? With seriousness, but all the same with a touch of humor, the French documentary series one ton five, broadcast on TV5, paints a captivating portrait of a man with a complex personality involved in a case which, at some point, will take a dramatic turn. To do this, the directors Clément Godart, Alexandre Mehring and Raphaël Rouyer went to meet Caribbean and Canadian criminals, Breton sailors and police officers, but also Martin Lepage himself on his release from prison.
