In the United States, the mobilization of students against the war in Gaza has escalated in recent days on university campuses. The prestigious Columbia University in New York has become the epicenter of this movement. To make themselves heard, the students set up a camp on site, amid arrests, expulsions and accusations of anti-Semitism.
“We all have the right to be here”shouts a student, who for several days has been one of the hundred or so young people camping on the Columbia lawn.
Among them, Irish and Mahmoud, two students who are protesting against the war in Gaza and calling for the suspension of student exchange programs with Israel. “They can’t stop us. The more they try to silence us, the louder we will scream.”assures Irish. “The students will stay here as long as necessary. Days, weeks, months…”promises Mahmoud for his part.
Yale, Harvard and MIT have joined the movement
The students are also demanding the resignation of the university president who, a few days ago, called on the NYPD to forcibly evacuate the campus. A police intervention strongly criticized and also denounced by a large part of the teachers. The situation creates a lot of tension on campus, but also outside, due to accusations of anti-Semitism. Accusations rejected by pro-Palestinian demonstrators, including Jewish students.
This did not prevent Joan from coming with around ten people, Israeli flags in hand, to demand the expulsion of these students. “We must send the National Guard. It’s the only solution!”, she asserts. For now, students remain determined and other campuses have joined them. Yale, Harvard and MIT, where arrests also took place.
