Old Port of Montreal | Colombian tourist dies after falling from boat into St. Lawrence

The body of William Eduardo Santander De La Hoz, a Colombian tourist who fell from a yacht near the Jacques Cartier Bridge on Saturday evening, was found in the St. Lawrence River on Tuesday.


A 33-year-old man reportedly fell from theOceannea tour boat, near the Jacques Cartier Bridge Saturday evening, around 9:15 p.m., according to information from the Montreal Police Department (SPVM) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). His body was recovered Tuesday from the waters of the St. Lawrence River, near Promenade-Bellerive Park, in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

About twenty people were on the boat at the time of the accident. According to the newspaper’s information The Heraldit would be William Eduardo Santander De La Hoz, a young Colombian man visiting Montreal for a summer vacation. He would have fallen from the third floor of a yacht. Many Colombian media had been worried in recent days about his disappearance.

“The victim was not wearing a life jacket,” said Émilie Proteau-Beaulieu, senior communications advisor at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

“This is an accidental event,” said Caroline Chèvrefils, media relations officer at the SPVM. An investigation is underway to shed light on the circumstances of the accident.

Resources from the CCG, the Auxiliary Coast Guard, units from the Montreal Fire Department, the SPVM and a National Defence air unit were deployed to search the water and the shores of nearby islands.
