Nunavut | Iqaluit declares a state of emergency due to a shortage of drinking water

(Iqaluit) The City of Iqaluit has declared a state of emergency due to a shortage of drinking water due to dry weather.

Nunavut’s capital says there has been little precipitation this summer and the flow of the Apex River, Iqaluit’s secondary water source, is at its lowest in 40 years.

As a result, Geraldine Lake, which serves as a water reservoir for Iqaluit, will not be replenished until the next freeze, it says.

The City says it is working to get regulatory approval to pump additional water from the nearby unnamed lake into the Apex River and then into Lake Geraldine.

The City estimates that it will have to pump more than 500 million liters of water. This pumping, if approved, should take 40 days.
