Novak Djokovic enters the ATP Cup

(Sydney) Novak Djokovic’s name is listed among Serbia’s representatives for the ATP Cup, suggesting the world number one in men’s tennis could compete at the Australian Open despite his vaccination status sparking Controversy.

ATP Cup organizers said on Tuesday that 18 of the top 20 players in the world will take part in the tournament, which will bring together 16 countries, including Canada, from 1er to January 9 in Sydney.

The Australian Open kicks off on Monday, January 17 in Melbourne.

Djokovic has not publicly announced whether he intends to participate in this tournament, of which he is the defending champion. He also did not disclose his vaccination status.

A little over two weeks ago, officials at the Australian Open announced that athletes will need to be fully immunized to take part in the event.

If he participates in the first major tournament of the year, Djokovic will then have the opportunity to achieve a 21e career triumph in Grand Slam tournaments in men’s singles.

Such a tour de force would allow him to break away from Swiss Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, with whom he shares first place with 20 career titles.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open on nine occasions, more than any other player.

The 16 nations qualified for the tournament will be divided into four groups. Canada will be in Group C, along with the United States, Great Britain and Germany.

The Canadian delegation is to bring together Félix Auger-Aliassime, 11e world player, Denis Shapovalov (14e), Brayden Schnur (235e), Steven Diez (270e) and Peter Polansky (282e).
