Mi’kmaw was officially proclaimed as the original language of Nova Scotia in a ceremony held on Sunday on Potlotek First Nation territory.

Mi’kmaq Grand Council Grand Chief Norman Sylliboy said he’s pleased the government is working to allow the Mi’kmaw to flourish for future generations.
He added that it was very important to preserve the language as it reflects Mi’kmaq cultural history and identity.
The Nova Scotia government has indicated that the Original Language Act aimed to ensure meaningful access to Indigenous language and culture.
The law will come into force on 1er October, which coincides with Treaty Day.
