(OTTAWA) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday he has no current plans to join the US president and invite his Israeli counterpart on an official visit to Canada.
Mr. Trudeau is expected to speak soon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after months of tension between the two countries.
Over the past year, Canada has publicly expressed its “concern” about rising violence in the Jewish state and judicial reform that Ottawa says would undermine democracy there.
Mr. Netanyahu comes to power through a coalition with right-wing politicians who have sought to ban the Palestinian flag and have taken steps to allow the expansion of Jewish settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, which are illegal under international law.
Mr. Trudeau assures that Canada remains a faithful friend of Israel, despite growing concerns about this judicial reform and the need for a de-escalation of violence.
President Joe Biden has also expressed concern about the upsurge in violence over the past month between Palestinians and Israelis, but he recently invited Mr Netanyahu for an official visit to the United States this year.
