Customers will instead be entitled to Scene+ points. These are redeemable for free movies and popcorn at Cineplex theaters, restaurant meals (Harvey’s, East Side Mario’s), travel on Expedia and gift cards (Apple, Best Buy).

IGA’s parent company, Empire, has become co-owner of the Scene+ loyalty program, along with Scotiabank and Cineplex. Already 10 million Canadians are members. The transition will begin in August in the Empire banners of the Atlantic provinces and will continue in the rest of Canada for a few months.

Air Miles members will be able to continue earning and redeeming points until the Scene+ program is available in their area. Empire operates Sobeys, FreshCo, Safeway, Les Marchés Tradition and Rachelle Béry stores, among others.
