Nine out of ten teachers love their profession, but a third no longer finds meaning in their missions. This is revealed on Wednesday May 31 by the 2023 barometer of the Unsa union on the state of mind of teachers that franceinfo was able to consult. According to this survey, 92% of teachers say they love their job.

Three quarters (73%) are even happy to exercise. But they are 34% to have lost the meaning of the missions assigned to them. This is five points less than last year. They are even more numerous among National Education inspectors. 51% of IEN no longer find meaning (up 9 points in one year).
They lack recognition
This disarray affects 52% of school doctors (plus 8 points). 44% of secondary teachers (plus 4 points) and 32% of primary teachers (plus 4 points) are in this case. Another striking development in this barometer is the feeling of recognition and respect for the profession. Seven out of ten teachers (71%) say they lack it. In 2016, 52% felt that way.
The vast majority of teachers (91%) even say they disagree with the political choices made by National Education. This disagreement has grown over the years. They were more than six out of ten in 2016. If the professors no longer find themselves in the choices of the ministry, it is also, according to the survey, that 90% of the people questioned believe that the working conditions have deteriorated in the year which has just passed.
Few would advise their profession to a young
Teachers also point to three areas that they would like to see improved as a priority: purchasing power, for two-thirds of respondents (65%), workload (51%) and career prospects (38%). It should be noted that for school doctors, the workload is a priority for 80% of them. Note also that, according to Unsa, only 19% of teachers surveyed would advise their profession to a young person. This is twice less than in 2016. They were almost 42% seven years ago.
Finally, the teachers were questioned on the challenges of digital technology in their profession. Almost half (47%) feel overwhelmed and undertrained. For 79%, the digitization of tasks remains complicated and six out of ten (59%) say that the digital tools available are not suitable. This 11th edition of the Unsa union barometer on the state of mind of teachers was carried out with 34,585 people, 72% of whom were women. 39% of respondents are Unsa members or supporters. A quarter are members or sympathizers of another trade union organization and a third (36%) do not belong to any trade union.
