Nicolas Sarkozy still acceptable, even in Macronie, despite the indictments

The legal file of the former President of the Republic continues to thicken. He is doubly indicted in the investigation into possible fraudulent maneuvers to exonerate him from suspicions of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign: for “concealment of witness subordination” and for “participation in a criminal association with a view to committing the offense of fraud in judgment by an organized gang.

Which does not prevent him from continuing to receive, and being received under the auspices of the Republic, by ministers, by Emmanuel Macron himself. In Macronie, the former head of state remains friendly.

“When Emmanuel Macron sees Nicolas Sarkozy, he must hear the sound of pots and pans”, an influential parliamentarian annoys. He would like the president to know “Cut the rope” with its predecessor. Only here: on September 24 again, the ex was at the Elysée.

“What surprises me more is that Gabriel Attal rushes to have lunch with him.”

“When Sarko is not at the helm, he is at the table,” mocks a friend of the current head of state. He is one of those who think that Nicolas Sarkozy’s sense of tactics and maneuver remain useful. Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, continues to see the man for whom he was the campaign director during the primary in 2016. “Because he is very faithful”, assures his entourage at Place Beauvau.

The mentor would also like to see his former collaborator run in the next presidential election. “What surprises me more is that Gabriel Attal rushes to have lunch with him,” confides an early Macronist. He guesses there “a way for the young Minister of Education to celebrate his new political stature”. But he worries: “Sarko is the fire. The one that lights but also the one that burns.”
