New development in the case of suspicions of Libyan financing weighing on Nicolas Sarkozy, during his presidential campaign in 2007. The former head of state will request additional information so that new documents are added to the file, franceinfo learned from concordant sources on Thursday September 5, confirming information from RTL.

These documents “in a totally incomprehensible manner, given their importance, do not appear in the file (…) which seriously harms Nicolas Sarkozy’s defense, “, say the lawyers of the former president in their conclusions, which franceinfo was able to see. For them, these documents could exonerate their client, so they want the justice system to study them.

Lawyers believe they have discovered “in a parallel legal procedure” three documents, including one from the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI). A document drawn up as part of another case: the case within the case, namely the retraction of the Franco-Lebanese intermediary Ziad Takkiedine who had initially accused Nicolas Sarkozy before backtracking.

This DGSI document casts doubt on the veracity of the “Libyan note”, a document which indicates that Muammar Gaddafi gave his agreement to finance Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007. This “Libyan note” is presented by the former head of state’s counsel as “the ‘genesis’ of the present procedure” against Nicolas Sarkozy. This note has been validated several times by the courts, Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyers have lost all their appeals so far.

The trial is scheduled to begin on January 6, 2025 and last four months. In this case, Nicolas Sarkozy is indicted for “concealment of embezzlement of public funds”, “passive corruption”, “illegal financing of an electoral campaign” and “criminal association”. The former head of state will be tried alongside 12 other people.
