NFL | Seahawks defeat Lions 37-31 in overtime

(Detroit) Geno Smith threw a second touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett on the first offensive series of overtime, and the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Detroit Lions 37-31 on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks (1-1) earned the victory after the Lions (1-1) erased a 10-point deficit late in the fourth quarter.

The Lions forced the extra quarter thanks to a 38-yard field goal from Riley Patterson on the last play of regulation time.

Smith gave the Seahawks an early lead in the fourth quarter when he completed a three-yard touchdown pass to Lockett.

When the Lions took possession on the next series, Tre Brown intercepted a pass from quarterback Jared Goff and drove into the end zone, giving the Seahawks a 31-21 lead.

Goff showed his toughness after receiving his first interception in 383 pass attempts — 30 short of the National Football League record — by completing a four-yard pass to Josh Reynolds for a touchdown.

This major capped a push that began with a roughing penalty against the quarterback inflicted on linebacker Darrell Taylor.

The Lions then forced the Seahawks to punt on a fourth down and 35 yard drive, aided by their only sack of the quarter of the game.

The Seahawks bounced back a week after suffering a heartbreaking home loss to the Los Angeles Rams, thanks to an impressive victory against a team that suddenly became relevant.

The Lions failed to give their pumped-up fans a reason to celebrate, 10 days after opening their season with a victory at the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Seahawks started the game with confidence, covering 75 yards in almost eight minutes, with the help of 12 plays. That drive ended with a Kenneth Walker touchdown from the one-yard line.

The Lions responded quickly, on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Josh Reynolds.

They took a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter when rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon, in his NFL debut, was thwarted by a trick play that led to Kalif Raymond’s touchdown on a pass. 36 yards from Goff.

On the Lions’ first play of the second half, David Montgomery lost the ball at his 22-yard line. The turnover eventually led to a Seahawks touchdown, scored by Walker on a three-yard run to tie the game.

As they had earlier in the game, the Lions responded with a touchdown, Montgomery’s on a four-yard run.

Late in the third quarter, Jason Myers made a 25-yard field goal for the Seahawks.
