(New York) At least one person died and five were injured Tuesday in the partial collapse of a parking lot in lower Manhattan, New York authorities announced.
“There were six workers in the building when it collapsed. Four of them were hospitalized and are in stable condition. One person died and one person refused treatment,” John Esposito, a New York Fire Department official, said at a press conference.
Footage circulating on social media showed overturned cars and smoke billowing from the collapsed building.
The structure is “unstable” said New York Mayor Eric Adams, who said operations were underway to find other possible victims in the rubble.
The multi-storey parking lot collapsed in on itself, “all the way to the basement,” a city official added.
The authorities notably specified that they were using drones and a robot dog to prevent rescuers from entering this building, the other part of which could always collapse.
