(East Rutherford) The New York Giants decided not to tag Saquon Barkley as a franchise player Tuesday so the star running back could test the free agent market.
The Giants tagged him last year before signing a one-year, $10.1 million deal before the start of training camp. Barkley would have made 12.2 million this year if the Giants had used the tag.
Aged 27, Barkley wants to sign a contract for several seasons. The two clans have until Wednesday – the market opening date – to find common ground.
Barkley appeared in 14 games last season, missing three games with an ankle injury. He rushed for 962 yards and six touchdowns and added four passing majors. He caught 41 balls.
Since his NFL debut with the Giants, Barkley has rushed for 5,211 yards for 35 touchdowns. He also caught 288 passes for 2,100 yards and 12 majors.
