A volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest Iceland, on the evening of Wednesday, May 29. This is the largest observed in the region in three years.
On the evening of Wednesday, May 29, on the Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of Iceland, the ground was torn more than three kilometers long. The lava gushed more than 200 meters high and flowed straight towards the town of Grindavik. On site, a woman had to leave her job quickly. “I don’t have any shoes, I only have my work clothes and my hair net. Everyone left very quickly”she says.
Volcanic eruptions have been occurring one after the other since December, but this is the largest observed in the region in three years. Nearby, more than a hundred tourists had to be evacuated. “We were about to go to the Blue Lagoon baths and spend a day there, but the police had to close the road and told us there would be an eruption at any moment.”, says one of them. Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, the highest number in all of Europe.
