New clashes, Tuesday, October 18, near the Joliot-Curie high school in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine). Firework mortar fire punctuated the morning near the school, the scene of scuffles since last week between high school students, young people from outside and police, noted an AFP journalist on the spot.

These shots in several directions took place shortly after 10 a.m., in response to two police arrests. The latter dispersed a group of young people wearing hoods and dressed in black stationed in front of the school, on the forecourt of the town hall.

High school students from this establishment began a protest movement on October 10 against the end of the homework assistance system, the framework for applying the principle of secularism, but also in support of a transferred teacher and trade unionist.

Until then, the situation had been calm, with in particular a strong presence of mediators from the city of Nanterre. A high school student told AFP that she was “shocked” : “It’s nonsense, they wanted to target the cops but fired in our direction, we were too scared with my friends”.

“We have to do with some ultras (…) who provoke the police”believes Jean-Pierre Bellier, the deputy mayor of Nanterre in charge of educational action, on the spot. “These react (…) with measure I find this morning, in comparison with what we have seen other times”.

On this Tuesday of social mobilization at the national level, the high school protest movement of Joliot-Curie has spread to other establishments in Hauts-de-Seine. A police source told AFP that a dozen police custody were in progress throughout the department after attempts to block in cities such as Colombes, Villeneuve-la-Garenne or Issy-les-Moulineaux.
