A thick cloud of Saharan dust occurred on Tuesday (April 23) in Athens and other parts of Greece.
At first glance, the light looks like a sunset over the Acropolis. But this orange sky is a thick cloud of sand from the Sahara. The entire city of Athens and its four million inhabitants find themselves immersed in a haze of dust. Powerful winds from the south crossed the Mediterranean and transported mineral materials from the desert.
Third time
On social networks, videos are multiplying, but fine particles impact health. The authorities recommend that vulnerable people stay sheltered at home. This is the third time that a cloud of sand has fallen on Greece since March, but this one is the densest and the largest. The Sahara releases up to 200 million tons of dust into the atmosphere each year.
