Netflix is transitioning from a streaming service to an interactive gaming platform, launching mobile games inspired by its original shows since 2021. Under new leadership, it is refocusing its strategy on four game categories, including interactive narratives and multiplayer experiences. Upcoming titles like “Squid Game: Unleashed” and “Spirit Crossing” highlight this shift. The company is also exploring cloud gaming to enable instant play on various devices, aiming to enhance user engagement and create a unique gaming ecosystem.
Netflix’s Expansion into the Gaming Realm
Netflix has evolved beyond its traditional offerings of movies and series to embrace the dynamic world of video games. The platform is making a bold move to transform from a mere streaming service into a more interactive entertainment experience, fundamentally reshaping how subscribers engage with content.
The journey into gaming commenced in 2021 with the introduction of mobile games available to subscribers, featuring titles inspired by Netflix’s original shows. This initiative was designed to boost user engagement and retention by encouraging longer viewing sessions on the platform.
A Shift in Strategy for Netflix Gaming
Despite these initial efforts, Netflix’s gaming strategy appeared fragmented. The mix of independent games, adaptations of popular series, blockbuster ports, and attempts at cloud gaming left the future direction somewhat ambiguous.
In light of these challenges, Netflix is revamping its approach to gaming. In 2023, Alain Tascan, a former vice president at Epic Games, was appointed to lead the Games division, launching an internal reorganization. Plans for a dedicated studio focused on AAA games have been paused, shifting towards a more adaptable and pragmatic strategy.
Netflix is now concentrating on four key categories of games:
- Interactive narratives that draw inspiration from reality TV shows.
- Multiplayer board games to encourage subscriber interaction.
- Children’s games tailored for younger audiences.
- Casual games, featuring adaptations of well-known franchises and original titles.
A standout example of this new direction is the game “Squid Game: Unleashed,” alongside plans for the release of the first MMO game, “Spirit Crossing,” later this year. This original title channels the artistic style of Studio Ghibli and the charm of “Animal Crossing,” marking a significant step forward in Netflix’s gaming portfolio.
In parallel, Netflix is intensifying its recruitment efforts to bolster its Games division, bringing in industry experts from Epic Games to broaden the gaming experience beyond mobile devices to include PCs and televisions. Noteworthy advancements include the development of games compatible with smart TVs, with smartphones serving as controllers. This initiative is part of a “platform independence” strategy, making games accessible to a wider audience without the need for a dedicated console.
Innovative Cloud Gaming Initiatives
Additionally, Netflix is gearing up to introduce a cloud-based game streaming service. Ongoing tests aim to facilitate game streaming directly on televisions, with a focus on cooperative and social experiences.
The ultimate aim? To establish a platform where users can play instantly, at any time and from anywhere. Alain Tascan believes that these innovations could take shape over the next five years, propelled by advancements in streaming technology, an audience accustomed to cross-platform gaming, and Netflix’s extensive catalog of franchises.
“Currently, accessing a series on Netflix is just a button press away, but gaming still requires searching for and downloading titles,” says Tascan. “Our mission is to eliminate this hurdle and provide an instantly accessible gaming service across all screens.”
Nevertheless, Netflix is confronted with several hurdles. Many users do not yet associate the platform with video gaming, leading to low engagement rates with the available games.
While the profitability and marketing strategies are still being tested, Netflix’s vast expertise in content creation and curation could potentially foster a unique gaming ecosystem, distinct from existing competitors, if harnessed effectively.
