Nestlé France and one of its subsidiaries were indicted this week in the investigation into the scandal of Buitoni pizzas contaminated with E.coli bacteria, the company announced on Friday, July 5. These pizzas, from the Fraîch’Up range, are suspected of having made dozens of children sick and of having caused the death of two children in the spring of 2022.
The subsidiary operating the factory where the pizzas were made and Nestlé France have been indicted “respectively on July 2 and 4”according to a company press release, which does not specify the charges. In February 2022, health authorities were alerted by the increase in cases of kidney failure in children, linked to contamination by Escherichia coli.
A judicial investigation was opened in May 2022 in Paris, in particular for involuntary manslaughter, unintentional injury, placing on the market a product dangerous to health and endangering others. At the end of March 2023, Nestlé France announced the permanent closure of its Caudry plant, which had partially restarted in mid-December, citing the fall in its sales. The production site was acquired by Italpizza in February.
