Parking with an SUV could soon cost more in Paris. Voters in the capital voted on Sunday February 4 in favor of tripling parking prices for larger cars. Some 1.3 million voters were invited to go to the polls to decide “for or against the creation of a specific rate for the parking of heavy, bulky, polluting individual cars”. The “for” side won with 54.56% of the votes, at the end of a day marked by very low participation, less than 6%.
According to the municipality’s project, the user of a thermal or plug-in hybrid vehicle weighing more than 1.6 tonnes (or two tonnes for an electric vehicle) will soon have to pay 18 euros per hour for parking in the central districts of the capital and 12 euros for the outer districts. This reform will be “presented at the Paris council meeting next May, for application on September 1”announced Anne Hidalgo, Sunday evening, expressing her “pride” of the result.
