Mud and debris as far as the eye can see is the result of the terrible floods that have affected Bushushu (Democratic Republic of Congo) since Thursday May 4th. A woman has lost all her children. “Now I no longer have a family, I am looking for a place to sleep”, she says. Torrential rains caused rivers to overflow. The water rose very quickly, taking everything in its path. Nearly 400 dead have already been counted.

A day of national mourning

The toll could rise. “We think there are a lot of bodies washed up in the lake. After three days they will already be visible, and I wonder how we’re going to do it. We don’t have body bags.”, deplores an agent of the Red Cross. The nearest hospital is overwhelmed. There are not enough personnel, medicines or places for all the injured. Deforestation in the region is singled out. It would be the cause of these climatic anomalies. This region has been affected four times in a short time. A national day of mourning was declared on Monday, May 8.
