Road safety data is poor in Loire-Atlantique and Vendée. The level of accidents, injuries and deaths are significantly higher than in 2021, according to the regional prefecture. A significant number: nearly 3,000 driving licenses have been withdrawnin 2022.
Between January 1 and July 31, 2022, 1,283 driving licenses were withdrawn in Vendée, including 313 for speeding and 529 for alcohol. In Loire-Atlantique, 1,683 permits were withdrawn from motorists, including 779 for alcohol and 606 for speeding. There is a relaxation of behaviorworries Didier Martin, the prefect of Loire-Atlantique, also prefect of the region: “the observation is that we have returned to levels of road crime equivalent to those before the covid crisis”.
A worrying number of deaths on the road
“Currently we are at 33 killed and we are at two-thirds of the year. In 2021 we were at 33 killed… but over the whole year”, deplores Gérard Gavory, the prefect of Vendée. There is a very strong deterioration, especially this summer, which can be explained by a “very good tourist season, and therefore more people on the roads”according to Didier Martin.
Nine people were killed on the road in Vendée this summerand 14 between July and August, in Loire-Atlantique. Since the beginning of the year, at least 70 people lost their lives on the roads of our two departments.
