After weeks of blocking, Turkey finally gave its agreement to support the entry of Sweden and Finland into theNATOTuesday, June 28. In exchange, Turkey obtained counterparts.

After three hours of negotiations at the opening of the summit of theNATO to Madrid (Spain)Tuesday, June 28, Turkey finally got what it wanted: full cooperation from Finland and Sweden against Kurdish fighters in the PKK. A condition sine what no to the lifting of the Turkish veto to accept the two Scandinavian countries in the Atlantic Alliance.

While Finland and Sweden had both announced that they wanted to join theNATO shortly after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Turkey opposed this enlargement, citing support from these two countries for the Kurdish independence movement. But behind these political questions also hides a diplomatic issue, Turkey wanting to impose its rhythm within the military alliance.
