The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced that it had arrested the young man on Thursday in the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. “He will appear in the Youth Division of the Court of Quebec to be charged with second degree murder,” the SPVM said in a statement.
The investigation is continuing, however, since another suspect in this case, also 17 years old, “would have managed to leave the country in order to flee the authorities”, and the SPVM is asking for the public’s help in this case.
The suspects are not identified since they are minors.
The death of Amir Benayad on January 13 was the first murder to occur in Montreal territory this year. He was not known to the police. His friends described him as a young man with “big dreams” and a “pure heart”.
