According to our information, the young woman would have given some details to the investigators which would have allowed them to make progress in this nebulous affair which occurred earlier this week.
Zoé Boutin, 18, is charged with complicity after the fact in the murder of Luc Lafontaine and contempt of the body.
The young woman was arrested Monday, in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, in the company of her boyfriend, Nicolas Côté, 19, accused for his part of second degree murder and insult to a corpse.
The two young adults, who would have met at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit, where they were studying, were then near the Richelieu River, where a boat was also seized.
Two days
According to the whistleblower, Côté allegedly murdered Luc Lafontaine on Saturday evening in La Prairie, where the 68-year-old lived. Two days elapsed between the moment of the murder and the couple’s arrest.
The sexagenarian had been reported missing the next day by relatives worried that he was absent from a family dinner.
A bloody knife was found by the police near his residence, which would have led the agents of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on the trail of the two suspects arrested on Monday.
“It’s shocking”
It is still unknown what would have prompted Nicolas Côté to commit this murder, nor how Boutin would have been involved in the crime. The two defendants had no criminal record.
A neighbor of the family of Zoé Boutin met Thursday in Sainte-Catherine, in Montérégie, testified to being in shock.
“It’s upsetting. Zoé, I saw her leave to take the bus every morning. It’s people that I rubbed shoulders with and there, overnight…”, she said before holding back a sob.
The SQ, which took over from the Roussillon Intermunicipal Police Board given the scale of the case, is continuing its investigation. The police force is still waiting for expert results.
Nicolas Côté must return to court at the end of November.
