Much remains to be done | The duty

Just five years ago, Quebec was struck by the terrible massacre perpetrated at the Islamic Cultural Center in its national capital. The attack left six people dead and many injured. Numerous reports have recounted the repercussions of this tragedy on the victims, their loved ones and the Muslim community, such as the one produced by Catherine Leblanc a year after the tragedy presented at Investigation.

This time, the director, with the assistance of screenwriters Linda Amyot and Martine Forand, goes a little further by focusing on what has really changed (or not) in Quebec in terms of relations and perceptions, and the initiatives implemented place by civil society and politicians to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

In light of the testimonies of citizens from all walks of life and of all religious denominations, and specialists in radicalization issues, the situation would not have improved so much… Bridges have been built between communities thanks to citizen initiatives, but these efforts have not slowed down the rise of the extreme right nor have they eliminated manifestations of intolerance and racism against citizens of the Muslim faith in the public space.

The documentary also draws a very interesting parallel with the attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the actions taken by the political class and the population to bring about change. We certainly emerge a little discouraged from this honest portrait, which puts our finger on the path that remains to be traveled.
