Motions of censure, mobilization against pension reform, war in Ukraine… What to remember from the interview with Manuel Bompard

The coordinator of La France insoumise (LFI) and deputy of Bouches-du-Rhône was the guest of “8:30 a.m. franceinfo”, Tuesday March 21, 2023.

Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France insoumise (LFI) and MP for Bouches-du-Rhône, was the guest of the 8:30 a.m. france infoTuesday March 21, 2023. Motions of censure, mobilization against pension reform, war in Ukraine… He answered questions from Marc Fauvelle and Salhia Brakhlia.

Motions of censorship: “Elisabeth Borne no longer has any legitimacy”

The day after the rejection of the two motions of censure filed against the government after recourse to Article 49.3 of the Constitution, Manuel Bompard highlights the fact that the cross-partisan motion failed “only nine voices”. He considers that this “did not go far at all thanks to all the opposition and a larger than expected part of the Republican deputies”. Despite this rejection, Manuel Bompard does not think that “the battle is over”. He sees it “the demonstration that this government is on borrowed time”.

He also believes that Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne “is charred”. “She no longer has any legitimacy to continue to lead the policy of the Nation, she must leave, taking her pension reform under her arm”, launches the coordinator of La France insoumise. Manuel Bompard also responds to criticism from the executive, which accuses LFI of supporting a motion tabled by MP Liot Charles de Courson, unfavorable to marriage for all. MP LFI recalls that “the law which aims to facilitate the evictions of tenants was adopted in the National Assembly with the votes of part of the presidential minority and the National Rally”.

Pensions: “If there are millions on Thursday, this government hanging by a thread will crack”

After the rejection of motions of censure against the government, Manuel Bompard believes that if the “censorship in the National Assembly has not worked, there remains popular censorship, censorship in the streets, in the strike” against pension reform. The deputy invites citizens to join the processions of the Intersyndicale in numbers during the next day of interprofessional mobilization on Thursday: “If we are millions of people in the street, this government hanging by a thread will crack”, he says. Manuel Bompard fears that says that “as long as this pension reform is on the table, the situation in the country will only continue to get tense”. “If the most powerful demonstrations in this country for 50 years do not yield a political result, if you gradually cut off all the channels that allow this anger to be expressed in a calm, peaceful and democratic way, we must not surprised that people are starting to think that maybe we should use another method, but I don’t want that”he adds.

Wild demonstrations: Manuel Bompard denounces “abusive arrests” in Paris

Manuel Bompard is indignant at the violence and arrests that occurred during the wild demonstrations in Paris. “Last Thursday, on the Place de la Concorde, nearly 300 people were arrested, only 9 were prosecuted, most of them for reminders of the law”, deplores the coordinator of La France insoumise. He thus judges “unacceptable what happened Monday evening in Paris”, namely the 234 arrests. It is, according to him, a “repression” and one “practice of abusive arrests”. Manuel Bompard puts “keep the power” to these arrests. “If you think you are going to succeed in silencing people with truncheons and judicial repression, you are wrong and the situation will get worse”, launches the deputy of Bouches-du-Rhône. Manuel Bompard therefore calls the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin “to be accountable and the President of the Republic to calm the situation and certainly not to continue to escalate it”.

Pensions: Emmanuel Macron must “take responsibility”

While Emmanuel Macron will be the guest of the 1 p.m. news from TF1 and France 2 on Wednesday, Manuel Bompard believes “necessary” this intervention in full mobilization against the pension reform. The coordinator of LFI accuses Emmanuel Macron of having “hidden and stashed away for weeks”what “probably added fuel to the fire” to the demonstrators. Manuel Bompard thus calls the Head of State “to take responsibility” and to “be reasonable” during this interview. “I invite him not to continue in what has been the attitude of this government for the moment, that is to say denial, stubbornness”he says.

Manuel Bompard also relays the call launched in particular by Patrick Vignal, Renaissance deputy for Hérault in “to ensure that this reform is not applied”. Either Emmanuel Macron “withdraw the text because he hears the popular and social legitimacy that has been expressed in the country for several weeks; either he makes a referendum and at the end, we decide; or he makes a dissolution and we return to the polls”assures the deputy.

Ukraine: Manuel Bompard finds “interesting the initiative taken by China to propose a peace plan”

More than a year after the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Manuel Bompard, LFI deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône judges “interesting the initiative taken by China to propose a peace plan”. He estimates that “The solution to this conflict must be diplomatic” and therefore calls on France to “sustain” such a plan. “France would do better to try to participate in an internationally coordinated initiative to ensure that a mediation is organized“, launches Manuel Bompard. The coordinator of La France insoumise pleads for this path, because it is not certain that the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Vladimir Poutine “brings a lot”the ICC not being “not recognized by all countries in the world”. He recognizes that said that a “a number of acts that are carried out in this war between Russia and Ukraine clearly amount to war crimes”.
