More than four million euros at auction for Kurt Cobain’s guitar on “Smells like teen spirit”

One of Kurt Cobain’s most famous guitars was sold on Sunday May 22 for nearly 4.3 million euros. The instrument appears in the music video for Nirvana’s cult song, Smells Like Teen Spirit. It’s the latest in a long line of items that have belonged to the grunge idol to reach such heights.

The clip of Smells Like Teen Spirit, like the song, made rock history as early as 1991, popularizing the sound and attitude of Nirvana. This left-handed blue guitar was going to break records at the auction organized on Monday in New York, it was written. But at a little over four million euros, it does not beat the previous madness, five and a half million for the guitar of the famous “MTV Unplugged” of 1993.

Moreover, the vest that Kurt Cobain wore during the acoustic concert had also been sold two years ago: more than 300,000 euros for a piece of dirty and perforated fabric. With the mythical Fender Mustang, also used to record the album nevermindthe billionaire Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, offered a new madness.

If part of the profits will be paid to associations, not sure that Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, ravaged by a glory he did not want, would approve of such an abundance of means.
