More than a ton of nuts sold at the Tocane-Saint -Apre market.

In just half an hour, the nuts brought to the market were sold. The ten producers present negotiated a five ton of fruit between 2 euros per kilo for the Franquette walnut, 1.7 euros for the Horn and 1.2 euros for the “Regionale”. It was the third market of the season.

Some producers arrived a little after the start of the exchanges, such as Marc Roby. This retired farmer from Saint-Victor owned three hectares of walnut trees on his farm before the 1999 storm. But the wind blew almost everything away. He did not have the courage to replant and therefore sells the fruits of the few trees that remained standing. It was Jean Françoois Puytorac who bought them from him. This merchant from Saint Martin-de-Ribérac buys and resells nuts “for the table”. These nuts go to the cooperatives, the big companies that make the kernel, which calibrate, blanch and ship to the supermarket. But the nut seller is worried about the future of markets like Tocane: “There are no longer young people, only retirees, markets like this are disappearing.”
