Like every five years, the National Forestry Office launched its major “selective thinning” project on Wednesday August 31 in the state forest of Verzy, in the Marne. During two months, several trees will be cut down to promote the development of the site’s 900 Fauxthose tortuous and famous beeches throughout France.
“They have an unusual growth because they climb very little in heightexplains Jean-Baptiste Richard, environmental manager of the ONF’s Aube Marne agency. So the trees passing above close the forest cover and the canopy, and the Faux de Verzy below cannot compete. It is deprived of light and if we did not intervene, it would wither away.”
47,000 euros of construction
In total, 2,400 trees should be cut by the end of October, scheduled date for the end of the project: “We are going to remove trees that present a danger to the Fakes, which can fall on them. But we will also remove healthy trees, to bring this famous light and allow the Fakes to better develop and reproduce.
Some cut trees remain on the ground, to promote biodiversity. Others are sold to finance part of this project. Its cost: 47,000 euros, paid for by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
