Nearly 100 hectares burned in Aude on Friday June 10. A hundred firefighters are still on site on Saturday.

The flames gave way to a charred landscape. If the fire is under control, Saturday June 11, the firefighters are still mobilized to put out the embers. “We make a definitive extinction of all the strains that we find. (…) The objective is that in the end, we are sure that when we go away, there will be no more chance that the fire will start again“, explains Lieutenant Olivier Vergé, head of the prevention service of Carcassonne (Aude).

The fire started in the afternoon of Friday, before spreading over more than 100 hectares. During the night, 300 firefighters were on site, supported by several Canadair, and three Dash. No homes were affected, but the fire did damage. A winegrower is notably inconsolable, after having lost a significant part of his harvest. He had started his operation only a few months ago.

In the department, fires are more and more frequent. “Undeniably, global warming is beginning to produce effects that we see year after year.“, comments Colonel Jean-Luc Beccari, departmental director of the Aude fire and rescue service.
