Montrealers who park illegally will soon have to pay a minimum of $89, as the Plante administration prepares to increase fines.
The city council will vote at the end of November on a general increase in penalties imposed by parking officers from 2023.
The minimum fine will increase from $50 to $61, to which must be added court fees for a total of $89. Parking in a reserved lane or handicapped area will increase from $234 to $271, plus court fees.
Montreal hopes that this increase will bring in additional revenue of $9 million per year.
“We punish bad behavior. It is clear that when the fine is not worth it, people are not encouraged to stop the bad behavior,” indicated the president of the executive committee, Dominique Ollivier, at a press conference on Tuesday morning.
