Several people living west of Montreal were startled Thursday morning when an earthquake shook the region.
A magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred around 7:37 a.m. approximately 6 km northeast of the municipality of Saint-Anicet.
The United States Geological Survey spoke of a 3.2 magnitude earthquake 7 km from Huntingdon.
According to Christopher Boucher, seismic analyst at Natural Resources Canada, the tremor was felt as far away as Cornwall and Laval, and even as far as Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts to the north, although to a lesser extent.
On social networks, residents of the Saint-Zotique and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield sectors also reported feeling the earthquake.
“It is a region quite susceptible to earthquakes. Everything along the St. Lawrence River is quite moderately conducive to it,” specifies Mr. Boucher.
He adds that an earthquake of similar magnitude to Thursday’s is not likely to cause significant material damage.
