The outcome was no longer really in doubt. The day after the 38th and last day of Ligue 1, AS Monaco announced in a press release, Sunday June 4, the departure of its coach Philippe Clement. Arrived in January 2022, the Belgian was dismissed from his duties one year from the end of his contract at the end of a season which saw the princely club finish in 6th position, without European qualification at stake.

“The sporting dynamics of this end of the season concluded with a final classification below expectations indicated that a change at the head of the first team had become necessary”, is it indicated in the press release published on the official website of the ASM. Still 4th two days from the end, the Monegasques have lost their last two meetings, in Rennes (2-0), then against Toulouse (2-1), ending with five defeats in their last seven games.

Installed on the bench to succeed the Croatian Niko Kovac, in January 2022, Philippe Clement will not have had the results expected by his management. Author of a good end to the first season with a 3rd place finish, he then failed to pass the qualifying rounds to join the group stage of the Champions League.

“AS Monaco is giving itself time to reflect in order to define the coach who will lead the first team next season”, adds the Principality club. Since 2018, Thierry Henry, Leonardo Jardim, Robert Moreno, Niko Kovac and therefore Philippe Clement have succeeded each other on the Monegasque bench.
