In Sainte-Soline (Deux-Sèvres), a day of protest takes place on Saturday, October 29 against the construction of a mega-basin, a water reservoir intended for agricultural irrigation. An important ecological issue for the demonstrators after a year of record drought.
Opponents of a mega-basin project in Deux-Sèvres are preparing for a day of protest on Saturday October 29. A few meters from the meeting point, work on a basin, a giant water reserve intended for agricultural irrigation, is about to begin. The stored water is pumped from groundwater or rivers. In the midst of a drought, demonstrators shout their disagreement against this construction site. “What we are going to get this weekend is the stoppage of the Sainte-Soline site”says Julien Le Guet, spokesperson for the Bassines non merci movement.
The collective wants a moratorium so that no other basin is built in France without thinking about the fair sharing of water. Ecologist Sandrine Rousseau is present on site to provide support. “The basins are a predation of water. We are already struggling in this department to have drinking water for the entire population”, said MP EELV. But in the eyes of some farmers, the water reservoir has become vital, especially in a year with little rain.
