Ontario’s minimum wage increases this Sunday to $16.55 an hour.
The province announced the increase in March, to give businesses time to plan.
The increase in the minimum wage in Ontario comes against a backdrop of inflation. It is up 6.8% from the previous rate of $15.50 per hour.
Labor advocates and opposition critics have said Ontario should implement a minimum wage of $20 an hour.
The Ontario Living Wage Network maintains that the living wage in the Greater Toronto Area is around $23 an hour.
The Progressive Conservatives canceled a planned increase in the minimum wage from $14 to $15 an hour after they came to power in 2018, then raised it to $15 in January last year and linked subsequent increases to inflation.
