The winter sun has arrived in the hills of the Var. The mimosa flowering has begun and in Tanneron, in the Var, its harvest is a family tradition.

The hills of the Côte d’Azur are covered in yellow as far as the eye can see, where the flowering of the mimosa lights up the winter. In Tanneron (Var), the Vial family has been picking them for five generations. This year, the little yellow pompoms were long overdue. “The drought this summer made it fall behind, it is three weeks late, but otherwise it is beautiful. It’s fluffy, it’s magnificent,” enthuses Bernard Vial, mimosist.

Symbol of happiness

On the farm, fresh mimosa is packaged for direct sale to individuals. Demand is particularly strong among florists in the south of France. Each delivery perfumes the store and catches the eye of customers, who particularly appreciate its color and the length of its shelf life. Once cut, for the mimosa to last a long time, care must be taken to avoid heat sources. In the language of flowers, the mimosa is a symbol of happiness and security.
