Quebec midwives are demanding “real recognition” for their work, while their union is preparing to meet with representatives of the Ministry of Health and Social Services on Thursday to restart negotiations.
Without a collective agreement since March 31, 2020, the union affiliated with the Federation of Professionals (FP-CSN) is demanding a salary catch up to put an end to the precariousness of the first years of practice.
While Quebec had promised midwives in 2015 full maternity follow-ups of 10% of pregnant Quebecers, it is clear that barely 4.5% of pregnant women have access to midwifery services, deplores the Regroupement. .
“The government of Quebec must take action and get involved so that midwives are part of the solution to the obstetrics crisis that is hitting Quebec,” said Josyane Giroux, president of the RSFQ in a statement.
“Recognizing the work of midwives promotes healthier families, more productive communities and a stronger health system,” she said.
According to the union, midwives receive about $ 2.50 for eight hours on call, while in the health network, professionals get one hour’s pay for each shift on call.
“Midwives can be called at any time of the day or night to accompany a birth or answer customer questions,” added Ms. Giroux.
