In Romania, middle and high school students will have to take courses on the Shoah. A sensitive subject in the country, where the Jewish population was decimated during the war.

Since the start of the school year in September, Romanian secondary schools have been taking courses on the Shoah. This is the case of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza college in Focșani (Romania). The goal is to open the eyes of the younger generation to the horror of this tragedy. “The fact that there is a place at school where students can discuss the Holocaust from a historical and moral perspective is very important”underlines Gabriela Obodariu, history teacher at the college.

Romania has long denied its involvement

This course on the Shoah does not leave students indifferent. The purpose of this exchange is to show the acts suffered by the Jewish community. Until 1944, the Romanian fascist regime was Hitler’s ally. A museum, opened three years ago in Iosa, tells the tragedy experienced by these Jews. For a long time, the country denied its involvement in this genocide.
