Gushue took control of the game when he stole four points in the second end. The Americans scored three in the sixth end to close the gap, but Canada closed the books with two in the ninth end.

Shuster saw his double takeout attempt slip outside to give the Canadians a commanding lead.

Canada made a substitution at the break after the fifth end, replacing Brett Gallant with Marc Kennedy.

The United States had a better second half. Shuster forced Gushue to a single point in the seventh end and made a field goal that earned his team three points in the eighth.

Gushue, the 2006 Olympic champion, improved to 3-2. The Americans, the reigning Olympic champions, slipped to 2-3.

Canadian Jennifer Jones is due to face Swiss Silvana Tirinzoni later on Sunday.
