Mélanie Joly will travel to India to “strengthen partnerships”

(Montreal) The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, will travel to India next week “to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen partnerships”. She is expected in Delhi on February 6 and 7, Global Affairs Canada said in a statement on Saturday.


“India is an essential partner for Canada in pursuing its objectives under the Indo-Pacific Strategy and on the international scene,” the statement said.

Mme Joly will meet his Indian counterpart, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. They will identify areas where the two countries could collaborate more on global and regional issues, especially as India holds the G20 Presidency this year.

Minister Joly will also meet with stakeholders from the business community and civil society.

“The rise of the Indo-Pacific can create tremendous local benefits and opportunities for prosperity, economic growth and better paying jobs across Canada. From clean technologies to critical minerals to education programs, there is a demand in India for what Canadians make and grow and for the services we provide,” said Mélanie Joly.

There are 1.8 million Canadians of Indian origin in Canada, according to Global Affairs Canada.

In 2021, India was the 13e Canada’s largest trading partner, the statement said, “Canadian direct investment in India amounting to Cdn 2.9 billion”.
