In Chico, a small town in northern California (United States), a megafire nicknamed “Park Fire” has already destroyed more than 44,000 hectares in a few days.
A deluge of fire is sweeping through the small Californian town of Chico. On the steep terrain, firefighters are battling the flames hand to hand to try to save a house. But 70 km away, another property has not been spared. According to the latest estimates, more than 44,000 hectares have already gone up in smoke in this area of Northern California (United States). Nearly 4,000 people have had to be evacuated, including Susan and her seven dogs: “Everything we had in our house can be replaced, but I would never have left my animals”.
These increasingly powerful megafires are a marker of global warming according to Jean-Baptiste Filippi, a researcher at the CNRS. “We are going to have more and more heat waves that will create drought conditions. We are going to have more days with a high risk of fires.”he explains. “Park Fire” has become one of the most impressive megafires recorded in this American state.
