In southern Pakistan, the Mohanasthe “bird people” as they call themselves themselves, there are still a handful to perpetuate a 5,000-year-old tradition. They live in boats, sn the largest body of water in the country, Lake Manchar.

Legend has it that they are the descendants of Noah, who saved humanity from the flood with his ark. In southern Pakistanthem Mohanas are the heirs of one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Their origin dates back to antiquity. Today, only a handful live and work on the lake. Excellent boatmen, Mohanas cook, eat and sleep on board their boat. The lake is their home.

When they are not fishing, Mohanas perpetuate a unique tradition in the world: they keep cormorants, trained to help them capture migratory birds. Shah Ali Mohana is one of the best hunters on the lake. It swims silently towards its prey. The cormorant serves as a decoy. The catches will be resold in the markets. Nicknamed “the bird people”, the Mohanas are descendants of the Indus Valley.
