(Toronto) Longtime TSN host Darren Dutchyshen died Wednesday at the age of 57.
The sports television network announced the news Thursday morning.
The cause of death has not been released. In a post from his family, she added that he had passed away “surrounded by his loved ones”.
Dutchyshen revealed on September 9, 2021 that he had prostate cancer. He spent a year off the air receiving treatment.
“His mind remained as lit as ever until the final moments, telling jokes – most of them quite good and all of them inappropriate,” his family wrote.
Dutchyshen began his career at TSN in 1995 and became one of the flagship hosts of SportsDesk, then SportsCentre, for the next three decades.
A native of Regina and raised in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, Dutchyshen also contributed to the channel’s reporting during CFL activities and the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.
“Darren’s larger-than-life personality, sense of humor and magnetic energy made him a natural host who connected easily with viewers,” said Stewart Johnston, vice president of sales and sports. to Bell Media, parent company of TSN.
“His enthusiasm reminded us every day why we love sport,” he added.
Dutchyshen began his career as a host at the STV network in Saskatoon, then also worked for IMTV in Dauphin, Manitoba. He then spent seven years as host of the evening sports show at ITV in Edmonton.
