McGill University seeks injunction to dismantle pro-Palestine encampment

McGill University has had enough: it has just filed a request for an urgent injunction to dismantle the pro-Palestine encampment installed on its campus since the end of April, we have learned The duty.

The university educational institution will ask the Superior Court to order the removal of all tents, barriers, fences and other structures erected on its campus in downtown Montreal, near Sherbrooke Street.

She also wants the Court to prevent any form of camping or occupation of the site as well as any demonstration that would be in contravention of the University’s rules and policies. She also wants the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) to be authorized to implement the judgment that will be rendered.

In his proceedings, a copy of which was obtained by The dutythe University indicates that it respects freedom of expression and peaceful assembly on its grounds, but that it cannot tolerate “unauthorized occupation” of its private property, especially when it disrupts enjoyment peaceful premises by students and staff, and when this poses a risk to public safety and health.

Last week, two students also filed a request for an injunction to limit the space where pro-Palestine demonstrations could take place on campus: they failed. And even though McGill had requested police intervention, the police had declined to act until now.

The request for an injunction will be presented Monday at the Montreal courthouse.
