Mayors must look in the mirror

In 2021, several new elected officials in the municipal world were brought to power. Politicians with their heads full of projects, but who are currently hitting the wall of reality.

After two years, these new mayors realize that it is not so easy to make things happen. Doing politics is the art of taking small steps every day to one day arrive at a destination, which can often seem very far away.

Politics is also an extreme sport. There are comments that have no place in the public arena, but there are also observations and criticisms that are entirely valid.

Internal

In recent weeks, we have realized the extent to which there is no harmony in municipal councils across the province.

Verbal violence and even physical altercations. But, are we surprised to see adults behave this way? Not really, especially when you look at what’s happening in schoolyards. Politicians are not always good examples for younger people.

Elected officials can quickly resolve much of the toxic climate in politics by better managing their behavior.

Fragility

Also, the chosen ones must return to the basic game. What is the role of a mayor? Municipal elected officials are a little too scattered. Citizens don’t want superheroes, but only politicians who take care of their city.

We also see that the new vintage of elect does not have a very thick shell. When we see Alexandre Fallu, municipal councilor in Lévis, denounce the fact that Mayor Gilles Lehouillier uses words like “wet squib”, “rubbish” or “demagoguery”, it smacks of fragility!

Municipal elected officials will have to do some introspection between now and the next election in 2025. Inevitably, they will have to ask themselves if they are in the right place.
