Mass resignations from the Board of the Union of Quebec Writers

The entire board of directors of the Union of Writers and Writers of Quebec (UNEQ) announces its resignation, two days after a chaotic general meeting during which union members refused to pay it a contribution.

“By rejecting this resolution, the members demonstrate a disavowal of the strategic vision carried by the board of directors of the UNEQ”, says one in a press release sent Friday, after 36 hours of radio silence.

UNEQ wanted to impose a contribution of 2.5% on the income of its members, and 5% on that of non-member authors. Following a general assembly marked by long cacophonous debates, the members refused the proposal by nearly 56%.

The resigning president, Suzanne Aubry, however, insisted on reiterating on Friday that she still believed that the unionization of authors was necessary to obtain better conditions from publishers. “The members of the board of directors remain convinced of the absolute necessity of collectively negotiating minimum conditions for literary artists. It will be up to a new team of elected officials to build another proposal to achieve this long-awaited goal for decades,” she said.

His resignation, like that of the other six members of the board of directors, will take effect on May 31.
